The University of Eastern Kentucky defines a disaster as unfortunate events that sometimes lead to the loss of lives and destruction of property. We have two types of disasters: natural disasters and manmade disasters. Manmade disasters differ with natural disasters in the aspect that they are actions carried out by humans with the sole intention of making environmental damage. There are several types of manmade disasters:
- Environmental accidents
- Transportation hazards
- Technological hazards
It’s not easy to cope up with a disaster, but with careful preparation one can be able to come out of a natural or a manmade disaster unscathed. You must always be prepared for a disaster, because they can happen any time and any day. Proper preparation could determine your survival and that of your family. In this guide, as an example, we will be using a toxic/ biological chemical attack.
The Protocols of a Biological Attack
Weapons that are chemically or biologically engineered happen to be the worst form of weapons to both man and his environment. With many countries making chemically engineered weapons secretly, it’s good to be prepared. The same weapons can find their way into the hands of a terrorist. When faced with such an attack you should follow the below steps:
- Start by finding the cause of the biological/chemical problem
Find the way in which the chemical attack can be brought near your home or you. The means of transportation is very important: be it in a product/food or it’s airborne. These days’ terrorists have very smart ways of sneaking poisonous biochemical products into a foreign country. If you are unable to find the source of the toxin, you will have to limit the number of times you go out, eat only what you are sure is safe, and avoid drinking water from any faucet. You can also have the water you use in your home tested. Get plenty of bottled water will be a safer move.

- Change Your Clothes:
Chemicals tend to our clothes more easily. It’s also a very efficient way of transferring toxins, since most of the times you cannot detect the chemicals with your naked eyes. All hazardous clothing should be destroyed by being burnt or being buried. When the outbreak happens to be very serious then you shouldn’t touch your clothes, instead use a pair of scissors to cut them off your body. Make sure there is no contact. Burning eyes should be rinsed for 10 to 15 minutes. Wash your body using soap and warm water.
- Get A Respirator:
The air will definitely be contaminated during a chemical attack. Breathing toxins can easily cause serious health damages. Purchase the correct respirator. The N-Class respirators happen to be the best when faced with a chemical disaster. They offer amazing filtration and cost a little more compared to the other respirators. They can effectively deal with airborne chemical particles. Some chemical compounds don’t need to be inhaled, just mere exposure can cause serious health issues. Know how the chemicals are spread as this will help in knowing how to deal with the disaster.
- Having a plan and being calm will help a lot
One of the crucial lessons you learnt about prepping, is being calm during a disaster and having an escape plan. No need to panic or run around. You will end up scaring everyone (worse if you have kids around). Effective survival plans will come in handy: stocking enough food, plenty of bottled water, a secure shelter, are just some of the important things you should include in your plan. Everything you buy to last during a disaster should be rotated so as to avoid using expired products. Try to make your family and yourself as comfortable as possible, don’t look for new foodstuffs, try to maintain the normal lifestyle but with safety restrictions. Kids have a hard time adjusting to sudden changes around them. Focus on the necessary items that are very important. The other thing would be to know all the possible disasters that can take place around your home, this will give you a hint on what to prepare for. Try making inquiries with the local authorities and getting updates always on the situation around you and the country. Being updated is very important.

Just like the natural disaster, manmade disasters can happen anytime. Knowing literally all the safety and caution protocols will be very helpful. All your family members should be educated on how to react during a disaster, this will reduce the level of dependency during a disaster. Don’t underestimate your children, they can be very useful when a disaster strikes, educating them at an early age will be very helpful. In order to make sure they don’t forget, you can always do smock disaster preparations and see how well they are prepared.
